Good First Hit-out

Gledders is looking pretty happy and so he should. The boys had a couple of good wins over St Marys Salesians on Sunday and Gledders was amongst the action which is a great sign. this weekend we have games against Old Mentonians on Saturday and the school at the Ken Phillips Day on Sunday. Actually, there were positive signs everywhere with good ball movement in the trying windy conditions last weekend. The younger members of the squad acquitted themselves well in what was, for many, their first taste of senior football. This included young Riley Thompson who was solid at full back. Trevo dominated the rucks for most of the day, while I was impressed with the run from Mitch Rafferty and Aaron Toy off the half back flank. I am not sure where Nicho was playing but his running ability hasn’t deserted him over the summer as he was running everywhere, with and without the ball.
In the earlier “game” we had solid performances from Premiership members Jordan Donnelly and Ben White, while Ollie Sharpe was very handy with the ruck duties. Rayner Seccull went for a number of his signature dashes off half back and Ari showed how dangerous he can be around goals, bagging three majors. But the most pleasing thing all day was the attack on the footy. Good old fashioned stuff as the boys had their heads over the ball with conviction and confidence.

This Saturday we take on Old Mentonians at their Keysborough playing fields. The first game is at 12noon and the second at 2pm. The U/19s and Women are playing on Sunday in the annual Ken Phillips Day at Haileybury Keysborough. The Women take on the newly formed girls’ school side at 9.30am and the boys 11am. The establishment of a girl’s team at the school is very exciting and should further cement the strong relationship between the club and the school. This will be the last practice game for the boys before the season starts on April 7th. Skills are only going to get better over the Easter break as we chase those elusive Easter Eggs.
The women are also playing on Tuesday against Old Brighton. This game will be taking place at Princes Park from6pm. It will be another chance for the girls to hone their skills. The Hearts have been training hard since Christmas so will be keen to finally get some match practice.
We hope to see you on the weekend.

There is still the position of canteen manager to fill. It is only for 9 Saturdays during the year and would suit someone looking to earn a bit of extra cash. You cant eat the profits but it may still appeal to someone looking for a bit of pocket money. Call hyxy on 0407 220952 for further details.

And while on the subject of assistance, we still have a number of game day vacancies that need filling. A roster system has been established to help meet our weekly requirements across the four teams. They range from running the boundary, goal umpiring, water boys and team managing. So please take a look at the draws for the various sides and pick a couple of games where you think you can assist. The aim is to share the load so the more volunteers we have, the easier it will be for everyone. Even a couple of Saturdays will make a difference.
Contact Mark Seccull on 0400 221651 and let him know when you can help. The fixtures are available at http://www.vafa.com.au/fixtures-results/fixtures/
